With my art, I seek to engage the viewer in a moment of wider awareness. I am fascinated by those feelings of clarity that we have when walking about the world and pausing. My method establishes a unique relationship of forms, keeping out the unnecessary, to cause the viewer to have these moments of awareness.
While I also work in pastel and acrylic, ink is my primary medium. I approach a new sheet without a composition in mind. Instead, I prepare my ink and brushes and commit to the first mark. The rest of the marks flow from there.
I was first drawn to the non-objective mode because I saw it as a way to pare away the literal associations of what the viewer already sees in the natural world and give them another means of seeing. I put aside the intellectual meaning, issues, and politics so that what remains is a human connection.
